The Goal

In this project, the focus was on blending VFX and motion techniques that built on top of a bleak world. The VFX had purpose, serving to enhance the story rather than overwhelm the edit. Focusing on techniques that break down the environment like a computer game, giving brief peeks into the 'code' behind it all.

This piece showcases what’s possible when using VFX and motion as a purposeful step in world-building and visual storytelling.

The Approach

The project began with a base edit using footage sourced from around the internet to establish a bleak world. Drawing initial inspiration from the SSX series, I aimed to recreate the low-poly aesthetic of its models.

Over time, the direction evolved into a more high-tech look, layered with UI motion graphics designed to feel like the world was being viewed and analysed through an advanced visor, giving glimpses into the 'code' behind reality.

The approach focused on using 'procedural' looking effects, using a mix of tracking data points and colour data, manipulating their shapes into a collective of shapes to use masks. Time displacements were applied to drag scenes in or out, pre-empting new shots with glitches. All VFX were done inside of Adobe After Effects.
